Types of Fossils Found at Dinosaur Cove
Dinosaurs discovered from the fossils
From the excavations at Dinosaur Cove geologists and scientists were able to discover four new species of dinosaurs. These include the Leaellynasaura, Qantassaurus, Timimus, Atlascopcosaurus. Also, because they were found in Australia and lived 105 million years ago, scientists also discovered that dinosaurs could survive in sub-freezing temperatures for long stretches of the year, as well as three months of total darkness. These fossils found at Dinosaur Cove are true form fossils. True form fossils are fossils of the actual animal or animal part.
Examples of Fossils
Some of the examples of bones found at Dinosaur Cove
include the limb bone of an herbivorous hypsilophodontid dinosaur, an ankle
bone of a large carnivorous dinosaur and to be the jaw of an amphibian
group, then thought to have become extinct more than 80 million years ago and A fossil uncovered at Dinosaur Cove in 1989 is the first evidence of tyrannosauroid dinosaurs in the southern hemisphere. They also discovered the skull of the Leaellynasaura dinosaur later on in the excavations. (As depicted above)
